Rules And Regulations For Overseas Trainees (Supernumerary position)
The Faculty of Radiologists of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in association with the approved training Hospitals provides a limited number of unpaid Registrar positions for training in Diagnostic Radiology.
Basic requirements:
Applicants must:
- Possess Medical qualifications recognised by the Irish Medical Council.
- Have completed their Intern year including six months medicine and six months surgery, and enclose certification of completion.
- Have at least one year's full time experience in a Clinical Hospital appointment in addition to the Intern year and enclose evidence thereof.
- Possess adequate fluency in spoken and written English.
- Provide proof of funding for the duration of training, as the posts available are unpaid posts. Government/military or university sponsorship is preferred.
Selection and interview:
- Suitable candidates will be called for interview.
- Interviews will be by representatives of the Faculty in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland at a date to be fixed after the closing date for application.
Successful applications:
At the completion of interviews, candidates will be informed of their acceptance or non-acceptance on the training programme. The successful candidate must, prior to taking up appointment, obtain
- Provisional registration - Irish Medical Council, Lynn House, Portobello Court,

- A certificate of Medical Insurance from one of the recognised Medical Insurance Companies, i.e. Medical Protection Society or the Medical Defence Union.

- Work Permit from the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Davitt House, 65a Adelaide Road, Dublin 2, Tel: (00 353 1) 631 2121 (For paid posts).
The appointment:
The training is for a period of one year, renewable for candidates whose work and academic progress is satisfactory and who are successful in the Primary Fellowship examination during which time he/she will be appointed to a non-paid registrar position in a hospital selected by the Faculty. The appointee will attend the Hospital regularly and punctually, and carry out the duties delegated to him/her by the Consultant Radiologist including after hour's duty as required. His position and responsibility in the Department will be no different to that of any other Registrar in Training. Attendance at lectures and courses organised by the Faculty is mandatory.
The maximum tenure of training appointments in the Faculty training scheme is five years.
The candidates will be expected to take Primary Examination of the Fellowship at the completion of the First Academic Year. The Final Fellowship Examination will normally be taken at the completion of the third year.
During training, there will be continual assessment by the Fellowship Advisory Board of the Faculty and if a candidate's progress is considered unsatisfactory, the Fellowship Advisory Board has the right to recommend dismissal of the candidate from the course.
Vacations:
Six weeks holidays, including study leave, will be allowed each year. These will be allocated by the Consultant in Administrative Charge of the Department on the same basis pertaining to the other trainees in the Department. If study leave is taken during the Academic term continuing attendance at Lectures will be required.
